DPF Cleaning Sydney — Cleaned, Not Replaced

A full DPF and a failed DPF aren’t the same thing. One can be cleaned, the other can’t — and most of the filters we see are full, not finished.

Symptoms

Most people book this after one of these.

  • “Exhaust Filter Full” or “DPF System Service Required” on the dash
  • The DPF light won’t go out, or it’s flashing
  • The car has dropped into limp mode and lost power
  • Black smoke out the exhaust
  • A scan came back with DPF codes — P2002, P2463, P242F, P244B, P2452
  • The car keeps trying to clean the filter and never seems to finish
  • The light went out after a long drive, then came back a few days later
  • Someone has quoted you for a new DPF

How a DPF cleans itself

How it works

Your DPF is a filter in the exhaust. It catches the black soot a diesel engine makes, so it doesn’t come out of the tailpipe. Filling up is normal. The filter is also meant to empty itself, by burning the soot away. There are three ways that burn can happen, and most DPF problems come down to which one is still working.

  1. The drive does it

At highway speed the exhaust gets hot enough to burn the soot off on its own. The car doesn’t have to do anything. Nas’s rule of thumb is a steady run of about half an hour every week, or an hour every fortnight, and that keeps the filter clean.

  2. The car does it

On short trips the exhaust never gets that hot, so the car heats it up on purpose to burn the soot off. That needs a few minutes of steady driving. Turn the engine off halfway and it has to start again next time. That’s how a car that only does school runs ends up blocked.

  3. We do it

When the car can’t clear the filter any more, we plug in a scan tool and make it run the burn. That works, as long as soot is the only thing in the filter.

Does the burn hold?

The question that decides it

Soot burns. Ash doesn’t.

Soot comes from fuel, and heat gets rid of it. Ash comes from the small amount of engine oil that burns on every drive. It builds up over thousands of burns, and no amount of heat will shift it. Once a filter is packed with ash, every burn fails, because burning was never going to fix it.

That doesn’t mean the filter is broken. It’s full, and it needs cleaning instead of burning.

On-car or off-car?

Two ways to do it

Both are a proper clean. You don’t have to pick: the free scan tells us which one your filter needs.

On the car

Right for you if

The soot still burns off when the car forces a burn. The filter just can’t keep up.

What we do
Two-stage chemical clean through the filter, a forced burn and a hydrogen clean, with the filter still on the car
How long
Half a day
  • The whole jobfrom $715

One price covers the clean, the forced burn and the hydrogen clean.

Before you bring it in: at least a quarter tank of fuel, so the car can run the forced burn. We also recommend an oil change afterwards.

Off the car

Right for you if

Forced burns don’t hold any more, or the filter is heavy with ash.

What we do
The filter comes off and goes through a three-stage clean: chemical, then water, then high-pressure air, then a flow test to confirm it’s clear
How long
About two days
  • The whole jobQuoted

Removal and refit are part of it. On some cars that’s four bolts. On others the filter is buried right behind the engine, and most of the exhaust has to come down.

Filter already off? Bring us the filter: $715, ready the same afternoon if it’s in by 11 am. The quickest and cheapest version of this job.

Not sure which one yours needs?

That’s what the free scan is for. We read the filter pressure, the temperatures and how the car has been trying to clean itself, and that decides it.

Trucks, tractors and heavy machinery

Bigger diesels and trade

Big diesels have DPFs too, and they block for the same reasons. Our off-car machine takes their filters as well as a car’s.

  • Trucks and vans
  • Tractors and harvesters
  • Earthmoving machinery
  • Generators

Every machine is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the filter. Call Nas to talk through yours.

Mechanics and out-of-area

Pulled a DPF off a customer’s car? Drop it at Kings Park before 11 am and collect it cleaned and flow-tested that afternoon. Outside Sydney, freight it to 13/11 Romford Road, Kings Park NSW 2148 — call Nas first so he knows it’s coming.

What happens on the day

The process

  1. 01

We scan it first, and the scan is free

We read the codes and the live data — filter pressure, temperatures, how the car has been trying to clean itself. You pay nothing for that.

  2. 02

You get told what it costs before we start

One diagnosis, one job. You will not be charged for a second clean because the first one was the wrong call.

  3. 03

    We clean it

On-car or off-car, whichever the scan pointed to.

  4. 04

    We check it worked

Pressure readings again, codes cleared, and a road test before you get the car back.

Sometimes the filter isn’t the real problem

When the cause is upstream

A blocked DPF is often the last thing to go wrong rather than the first. The soot filling it has to come from somewhere — worn injectors, a stuck EGR valve, a faulty sensor or a turbo problem all make more soot than the engine should, and a filter downstream of any of them will keep blocking no matter how many times it’s cleaned.

That’s why we scan before we clean. If the reason your filter is full is sitting somewhere else in the engine, cleaning the filter on its own buys you a few months and you’re back where you started.

A note from Nas

If the intake and EGR are carrying the same carbon, cleaning the filter on its own won’t last. The Full Engine clean does both sides of the EGR in a day, and the scan tells us whether your car needs it.

Cheaper than replacing

The comparison

Most people who call us have already been quoted for a new filter.

Replacement quotes routinely run into the thousands — one customer came to us after being quoted over $5,000 for a full replacement, and had his car back the same day for a fraction of it. Yours will depend on the vehicle and on genuine versus aftermarket, so we won’t put a number on it until we’ve looked. What we can say is that a clean starts at $715, and that we’ll tell you honestly when a clean isn’t the answer.

“All other places quoted me over $5000 and needing a full replacement. Nas was extremely helpful and got my car back on the road in a few hours for a fraction of the cost.”

Michael MathesonLand RoverGoogle Review

Cleaning isn’t always the answer. A filter can be cracked, melted or collapsed inside, and when that’s what the scan finds, no clean will save it — we’ll tell you that rather than take your money and hand you the same problem back.

Not sure whether yours can be cleaned? The free scan answers that, and it costs nothing.
