Which Peugeot do you have?

Peugeot has two engines that matter here, and one of them is not our job at all — so let us deal with that first.

If you have the 1.2 PureTech petrol and you have rough running together with an oil pressure light or a hard brake pedal, stop reading and get it to a mechanic. That is the wet timing belt shedding rubber into the oil, and it starves the engine. It is not carbon, we cannot clean it, and it does not wait. Stellantis cut the belt interval to 100,000 km or six years for good reason.

If you have a BlueHDi diesel, that is where we can help. The particulate filter clogs on urban driving, and the EGR circuit sludges up alongside it.

Everything else on this page is carbon, and carbon we can fix.

Common Peugeot carbon problems

What we see

If you drive a petrol Peugeot

Petrol

Intake Valve Carbon on the Petrol

  • The turbocharged petrol engines inject fuel into the cylinder, so nothing washes the back of the intake valves.
  • Oil vapour from the breather bakes onto the valve and hardens.
  • City use builds it faster than open-road kilometres.
  • Lumpy idle, worst from cold.
  • Hesitation off the line on a small engine that has little in reserve.
  • Misfire codes (P0300–P0304) with no ignition fault found.
  • Walnut blasting once deposits have hardened — the intake comes off and each port is cleaned mechanically.
  • Not to be confused with the wet belt fault. If you also have an oil pressure warning or a hard brake pedal, that is a different and more urgent problem, and we will send you to a mechanic rather than clean anything.

Particulate Filter Blockage on the BlueHDi

  • A regeneration needs a sustained run to burn the soot out, and these cars are overwhelmingly used in town.
  • Every interrupted regeneration leaves the filter fuller than before, so the warnings come closer together.
  • A sooted EGR circuit loads it faster than driving alone would.
  • Engine warning light, then emergency mode with the power cut right back.
  • Fuel consumption noticeably up.
  • A hot smell after parking.
  • Codes in the P2002 and P2452–P2463 range.
  • Where we can, we clean the filter on the car — nothing removed, cut open or replaced. If it has to come off, it gets a three-stage clean and new gaskets, quoted first. Replacement is expensive and usually unnecessary.
  • We look at why it blocked, because cleaning a filter on a car that still cannot finish a regeneration only buys a few months.
  • Nothing is deleted. A car without its emissions equipment is not roadworthy in New South Wales.

EGR and Intake Soot on the Diesel

  • The EGR valve and cooler feed sooty exhaust gas into the intake, where it meets oil mist from the breather.
  • The two form a greasy deposit that narrows the intake runners.
  • Short urban trips never get it hot enough to burn away.
  • A small diesel that has run out of puff, worst pulling away.
  • Black smoke when you ask for anything.
  • An idle that will not hold steady, with EGR flow codes stored (P0401, P0402).
  • We clean the EGR circuit and intake manifold so the airway is clear again.
  • On a small diesel this often makes a bigger difference than owners expect, because there was very little spare airflow to start with.

Injector Fouling on the Diesel

  • Deposits on the injector tips spoil the spray pattern, so diesel arrives as droplets rather than a fine mist.
  • Worse combustion means more soot, loading the filter faster.
  • Short trips never get the tips hot enough to stay clean.
  • Hard starting on a cold morning.
  • A rattly idle that settles as it warms.
  • Smoke on start-up and worse economy.
  • Fuel rail pressure codes (P0087, P0088, P008A).
  • We clean the whole fuel system on the car with the engine running — injectors, pump and rail — nothing removed or sent away.
  • Where the filter has also loaded, this is what stops it filling again.

Keeping your Peugeot clean

Prevention

To keep a Peugeot BlueHDi diesel clean, let its particulate filter finish each self-clean (DPF burn). Nas’s rule of thumb is a steady run of about half an hour every week, or an hour every fortnight. These cars are mostly driven in town, and every interrupted self-clean leaves the filter fuller. A sooted EGR circuit loads it faster still. The turbo petrols build carbon on the back of the intake valves instead, where no fuel reaches.

If your BlueHDi shows the engine light or runs out of puff, book a time at our Kings Park workshop. We scan it free first, tell you what it needs, and quote before any work starts. A loaded filter may need an on-car DPF clean, and a sooted circuit an EGR and intake clean. On the petrol, hardened valve deposits may need walnut blasting.

Highly recommend! The service was professional and quick, and the mechanic was transparent about the necessary repairs. My car runs great now, and I appreciate their efficiency and clear communication. I'll definitely be returning for future service.

I took my BMW X1 in to get a DPF issue fixed, and Nas was extremely helpful. He resolved the problem at a very reasonable cost compared to replacing the DPF. He also took the time to answer all my questions about the issue and helped me look into other potential problems as well.

Before any engine work on your Peugeot, search your VIN on the government vehicle recalls site. Recall repairs are free, so check there first.

  • Watch the fuel use. On a BlueHDi, a noticeable rise in fuel use can mean the filter is loading. Book it in then, before emergency mode (limp mode) cuts the power right back.
  • Don’t put up with black smoke. On a small BlueHDi, black smoke when you put your foot down can mean the EGR circuit is sooting up. Have it looked at before that soot reaches the filter.
  • Say no to a filter delete. A Peugeot without its emissions equipment is not roadworthy in New South Wales. Where we can, we clean the filter on the car, so nothing is removed, cut open or replaced.
  • Leave the fuel additive on the shelf. The turbo petrols spray fuel straight into the cylinder, so nothing in the tank reaches the intake valves. An additive won’t shift carbon that has hardened there.
