The first thing worth knowing about a Hyundai is that not every petrol engine has the carbon problem, and we check before recommending anything.
The GDI and T-GDI engines inject fuel straight into the cylinder, so the intake valves never get washed and deposits collect there. Those are the ones that eventually need walnut blasting. Other Hyundai petrol engines still use port injection, which sprays the valves and largely prevents it — if that is what you have, we will tell you the job is not needed.
The 2.2 CRDi diesel in the Santa Fe, Palisade and Staria is a different story, and there the EGR circuit and the particulate filter are what matter, especially on a vehicle used around town.
The hybrids — Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe — run their petrol engines gently and rarely get them properly hot, which brings its own kind of build-up.
